Mar Vista Goes Green

Join us at the Fall Festival!

As my friend Sherri Akers of the MVCC Green Committee says, “While many are talking, Mar Vista is doing.”  This coming Saturday, October 3rd, is a chance to see the greenies of Mar Vista in action as the park hosts its annual Fall Festival.  The park staff knows how to throw a good party - at past events, there has always been great entertainment and fun stuff for the kids, and our LA City Council Rep Bill Rosendahl always comes to mingle and say some remarks to the crowd.  This year’s twist is that all the booths will have some green tie in - which is an amazing opportunity to see what’s going on in this corner of Los Angeles.

I am especially looking forward to visiting the folks at Your Daily Thread, EcoHatchery and Solar City - and there are many more.  Check out the festival blog for a listing of all the booths, many of them will be giving away door prizes, including us!  We have one of our INSPIRE CHANGE tees in the drawing, and we’ll be selling them at our booth, too, if you want to be sure to get one.  We’ll also be making beaded maracas in the morning and we have a special guest at 1:30pm. Come by and say hello.

But don’t stop there:  participate in our tee shirt  giveaway  by answering “What did you learn at the festival?” in this post’s comment section.  Starting at 4pm on Saturday and closing at 3:59pm on Sunday, come back here to tell us who you talked to, what gave you hope, what you found interesting, what your kids liked.  Our goal is to spark conversation about all the cool green stuff that is out there. To enter, leave a comment on this post during that 24 hour period and you just may be the lucky one.  Check back next week to see who won the tee shirt.

Come for the conversation, stay for the Stilt Circus!  They go on at 3pm and will blow you away.

A few years ago after I did the Sustainable Living workshops at SMC, I felt like I lived in a little green bubble and no one, including my only family members, thought I had my head screwed on right. Now just a three or four years later, I am heartened to see a force of community spreading the green word and transforming the way we deal with food, garden, water, trash and energy. Even my husband will recycle without grouching! Next I’d love to see eco-products that are comparably priced to “traditional” products so that the larger community doesn’t see all this as elitist fluff.

I feel so lucky to live in Mar Vista! We really have turned into the Green Capitol of Southern California. And we owe it all to…us. It seems that everyone is making a contribution, talking about what they hope to accomplish, working with the schools, farmer’s markets, parks, etc. It feels like the 60’s without the…well, you know… My husband was so sorry he missed the festival, especially when I mentioned the 10 foot tall woman cracking not one, but TWO whips! I can’t wait to see what happens next!
